The South Hamilton girls golf team had a great excuse for soaking up the sunlight Friday afternoon. The Hawks traveled to Marshalltown for a practice swing at all 18 holes they’ll be facing Monday and Tuesday at the Class 2A state tournament.

As the golf season gets into full swing there are a lot of upcoming events for area players. Two of my favorite sports-related tourneys are on the horizon — the District 10 Wrestling Association Kevin Kubalic Golf Outing and the Mercer County Hall of Fame Scramble.

One of the great deals in golf is taking place this month at a couple courses in the area and I urge any golfer to take advantage of it.

There isn’t a golfer around who hasn’t at least for a moment, entertained the thought of being on the PGA Tour. Sitting in a cubicle, going over TPS reports, dreaming of sinking a putt to win the U.S. Open, is a daydream that is played in the minds of many who work 9 to 5 and play golf any other time.

Summer brings a chance for 9- to 18-year-olds to get help with their golf swings and brush up on other skills that can make a difference in life.

A four-decade-old tradition continues with a shotgun blast at 8 a.m. June 12, signaling time to tee off for the George Allen Golf Tournament at the Broken Tee Golf Course in Englewood.
